Question for people who saw Apocalypto by Mel Gibson?

In the scene in the beggining of the movie when they are hunting the tapir, what was the trap that killed the animal? How did it work? I'm not an animal rights person either I just want to know how that trap was made, and how they made it, because they were uncivilized. What materials could they have used to make it?
